In the case study video, a classroom was seen building boats and documenting their progress through the use of ipads. While the teacher in charge did seem slightly overwhelmed with the integration of technology into the lesson, she articulates her willingness to let go and the surprising positive results that the integration showed. The students were able to search on the internet, blueprints and schematics for boats to inform their own designs, effectively learning both the vocabulary, and the purposes of the various pieces of the boats in the process. The students also documented their trial-and-error process of their boat designs through the use of ipads provided to them. This served as an effective assessment tool for the teacher, more importantly however, it served as a way to teach important video editing skills.
The use of video documentation served as a great way to visualize the learning accomplished by the students. The video blogs sparked discussions amongst teachers, provided a platform to present positive reinforcements for the parents who had an opportunity to watch the video. The videos gave a linear, step by step update on the students’ progress on their designs and the trial floats, allowing the teacher to refer back to previous videos in order to effectively assess the students’ progress. Additional communication technology could have been used to assist the teacher in finding a little more control over the class. A live communication blog could have been used within the class to give a faster and more accurate progress updates to the teacher, and pass questions and answers back and forth in real time between students and teachers. The video demonstrated a project that was both effective and fun. The students’ learning outcomes were multidimensional in science, communications, and technology. The teacher merely served as a guide and allowed the students creative freedom to run with their ideas and justify them with their progression checks through the video blogs.
