Preparation and Story Creation
While I very much enjoyed playing Dungeons and Dragons with the students, there were quite a bit of preparation and front end work involved in running these games. As the Dungeon Master(DM) I had to create a world for students(characters) to interact with, this meant finding appropriate music for various plot points(Artifact #2), finding visual representations of the Non-Player Characters(NPCs), environments and quest items(Artifact #1), as well as creating combat encounters that require stat generations(Artifact #3).

Student Work
In addition to creating their characters through character sheets, each students were required to write a quick back story for each of their characters, as well as an option of drawing, creating, or finding an image that best represents their characters. Each student had to consider the framework and context in which their character's race, class and background. For example, Akmenos the Tiefling Rogue's back story considers the fact that Tieflings tend to face challenges as outsiders of society. The creation of each student character's back stories involved the consideration of 4 to 5 source materials and gave each students an opportunity to be both creative while constraining textual restraints.

I also had students draw up quick summaries of previous day's events and had them perform a quick recap summary accompanied by epic music(attached video) at the start of each session. It's initial purpose was to help the project connect further to some ELA outcomes, but it very quickly became one of MY favourite part of the day.

The statistic/rules based portion of the characters are represented through the character sheets(Left). In order to create characters correctly, they were required to read through the Intro: Creating a D&D 5e Character for Beginners! document(Right).
